Director Statement

This film is inspired by a home invasion I experienced while I was home alone at 7 years old. The intruders were men from my community, faces I recognized. It wasn’t until later that I began to understand the cycle of criminality. I committed my first break and enter at thirteen, one of many mistakes that I have spent my life trying to fix.

I grew up in a tight-knit Cambodian community and realized, later, how little guidance we had. Our parents were often uneducated country folks, affected by war and genocide, trying to figure out how to raise children in their twenties. At home, discipline was harsh, an attempt to "teach" us. Meanwhile, my peers and I were out in the world, trying to see what works and what doesn't, like blind mice, bumping and scratching into one another, trying to get to the cheese.

What interest me is how we, over time, disconnected from behaviours that don't work. This film is about that. It's about making mistakes, then realizing the need to make life better, not just for ourselves, but for the generation after. This is a much needed love letter to my community, to forgive our mistakes so we can do better.
